Lawn Manor Academy wrapped up Refugee Week with a vibrant Celebration of Welcomes, showcasing the school’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
During the annual event which took place between 17-23rd June, students and their families gathered to celebrate the various cultural identities that enrich Lawn Manor Academy. The evening was brimming with music, film, dance, poetry, and presentations, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of the school community.
Among the 200 attendees was the Mayor of Swindon, Councillor Imtiyaz Shaikh, who expressed his delight at being part of the festivities. “I thoroughly enjoyed the annual Refugee Week activities at Lawn Manor Academy,” he remarked. “The students I met demonstrated diversity in many ways, including through their wonderful foods from different nations; the Jollof rice was particularly impressive!”
“I was struck by their collaborative efforts to promote diversity and awareness,” the Mayor continued. “Their creativity and commitment to inclusion are commendable, ensuring that no one feels excluded.”
The event also marked Lawn Manor Academy’s recognition as one of the 415 Schools of Sanctuary in the UK. Over the past year, the school has actively promoted understanding and compassion for individuals seeking safety, fostering a culture of kindness throughout the campus.
Will Smith, Head of PSHE at Lawn Manor Academy, expressed pride in the school’s diversity and its role in nurturing every student. “Inclusivity and kindness are fundamental to our educational approach,” he noted. “The Celebration of Welcomes was a testament to our community spirit, uniting everyone to celebrate the rich tapestry of Lawn Manor Academy.”
