Celebrating Swindon’s Inspirational Volunteers

For the next two weeks, Swindon Borough Council will run its own advent calendar to share stories from 12 organisations across the Borough who spread a little happiness into people’s lives.

These organisations and individuals selflessly give their time and energy to support local organisations, helping to improve the lives of residents and foster a sense of community across the borough.

Through an advent calendar-style campaign, the Council will share heart-warming stories from 12 organisations that rely on volunteers to spread joy and support. From Telephone Befrienders to pet fosterers, Swindon’s volunteers have dedicated an incredible 21,900 hours this year alone, helping some of the most vulnerable members of the community.

The Harbour Project, a Swindon-based charity offering support to refugees and asylum seekers, hosted Councillor Jim Grant, Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships, for a tour of its Broadgreen Community Centre offices. He met with volunteers like Amanda, who has been part of the project for over two years.

Amanda shared her experience, saying, “I love being part of a friendly team at Harbour, supporting our visitors in various ways while they rebuild their lives. It feels like a big family, giving people a sense of hope. I’ve met incredible individuals who show such resilience and determination.”

Tom Bain, CEO of the Harbour Project, praised the dedication of volunteers, noting, “We could not do the work we do without their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment. Whether teaching, offering translation, or providing advice, our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do.”

Councillor Grant expressed his gratitude, saying, “Volunteers are the backbone of our community. It’s fantastic to see their impact first-hand and celebrate the work they do. I encourage residents to consider volunteering, even if it’s just an hour a week. Every bit of support makes a difference.”

Another local volunteer, Roger, who works with Swindon Carers Centre, reflected on his role supporting carers through events. He said, “Being a volunteer is rewarding. I’ve gone from feeling isolated to being surrounded by people in similar circumstances. It’s fulfilling to help carers enjoy themselves and find a moment of respite.”

Long-time volunteer Dawn, who has supported Julia’s House Children’s Hospice since 2015, shared her journey. She began fundraising after learning Swindon lacked a children’s hospice and has since become a regular face at community events, offering a warm smile and support wherever needed.

For those inspired by these stories, Swindon Borough Council’s Live Well Swindon team coordinates volunteering opportunities. To get involved, email volunteer@swindon.gov.uk or explore local organisations to see how you can make a difference.
