In a week that recognises the incredible efforts of volunteers across the country, the u3a movement is shining a well-deserved spotlight on its members – ordinary people doing extraordinary things in the name of community and shared learning.
Volunteer Week, running from 3rd to 9th June, is a timely opportunity to highlight the powerful impact of those who give their time freely to help others learn, connect, and thrive. For over 40 years, u3a – a UK-wide network made up of more than 1,000 charities – has quietly shaped lives, not through formal classrooms or expensive courses, but through peer-led learning and good old-fashioned human connection.
At the heart of u3a is a simple yet powerful concept: volunteers sharing their knowledge, skills, and life experiences with fellow members. From language groups to singing circles, technology tutorials to science talks, the depth and variety of subjects on offer is as impressive as the people who lead them.
Take Jane Giffould from Halstead u3a, for instance. After struggling with conversational German during a flying course in Germany, Jane returned home and decided to do something about it. “I started a local German group,” she says. “It’s since moved online and grown nationally. We keep it structured but fun. I also lead a French group and give regular science and tech talks.” Jane’s story is a testament to the ripple effect of passion and curiosity.
Similarly, Caroline Knapp from Dulwich & District u3a began her journey with Singing for Pleasure sessions. “When a local group started forming, I jumped in,” she explains. “It began with a handful of people and has become a vibrant community. Volunteering gives me purpose, connection, and joy.”
The message from both Jane and Caroline is clear: being part of u3a isn’t just about helping others – it’s about personal fulfilment too.
As Volunteer Week continues, u3a invites others to consider joining their growing network of groups and branches. Whether you’re sharing a hobby, learning a new skill, or simply looking to make friends later in life, u3a is a welcoming space for those who never stop wondering.
