Swindon families will have one last chance to make the most of the summer holidays when Wharf Green hosts a free day of entertainment later this month.
A Day at the Wharf will take place on Saturday, 29 August, with Wharf Green transformed into a hub of music, games, creative activities and family entertainment from 10am to 4pm.
There will be live music throughout the day on a dedicated stage, with support from Swindon 105.5, while a selection of local organisations will be getting creative with arts and crafts.
Artsite, Museum & Art Swindon and the Creation Station will all be running activities, while Swindon Open Studios will be holding children’s reading sessions.
One of the most popular attractions from last year’s Summer at the Green events is also making a return. The Bubble Master will be back with his bubble-filled entertainment between 11am and 2.30pm, having proved a big hit with younger visitors last summer.
For those looking for something a little more energetic, Swindon Fencing Club will be offering free fencing taster sessions, while lawn games will provide plenty of opportunities for families to get involved.
There will also be a chance to discover the next generation of Swindon’s town criers, with the Swindon Junior Town Cryer competition taking place at midday.
Alongside the entertainment, local charities and community groups will have stalls showcasing the work they do and ways for people to get involved in their local community.
Councillor Matthew Vallender, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Planning and Regeneration, said the event was intended to provide families with something to enjoy as the school holidays draw to a close.
“When it comes to the end of the summer holidays, we know children may be dreading the return to school (and parents may be running out of ways to entertain their kids) so why not come and have a last dance at Wharf Green?” he said.
“A Day at the Wharf will be a fun-filled day to mark the end of the holidays and I’m really pleased we’re able to put something like this on for free.
“So if you’re in the area, or if you’re just looking for something to do, come on down and take part.”
The event is free and there is no need to book, making it an easy option for families looking for something to do on the final weekend of the summer break.
Activities and entertainment are subject to change depending on the weather and any unforeseen circumstances. Food outlets may also be available, although food and refreshments will be charged separately.
