Campaigners demonstrate against Benefit Sanctions

Swindon People’s Assembly will be joining with Unite the Union to demonstrate against benefit sanctions. They will be outside the Job Centre in Spring Gardens from 11-1pm on Wednesday 31st May. This is part of a national ongoing campaign.

‘More and more people are facing benefit sanctions. 300,000 people have had their benefits suddenly stopped by sanctions in a twelve month period.

Many have been plunged into poverty, unable to heat their homes or even eat. How is this meant to help prepare people for work? Benefit sanctions must be fought against. These sanctions are cruel and handed out for ridiculous reasons such as: arriving minutes late to a meeting, not applying for jobs when waiting to start a new job, missing an appointment on the day of the funeral of a close family member or because you have a hospital appointment.

People have starved to death, been made homeless and been driven to killing themselves because of benefit sanctions.

This has to stop,’ said Angel Grace of the People’s Assembly.

There will be literature to inform people what to do if they are sanctioned and a link to share your story with Unite the Union. Everyone who is concerned about this government’s treatment of some of our most vulnerable people should come along.
