Call for new grit bins after Council reduce winter gritting routes

Stratton Parish Councillor and Labour’s St Margaret & South Marston Candidate, Barrie Jennings, has urged Swindon Council to provide grit bins on roads that were recently cut from the Council’s gritting routes.

Last year Swindon reduced its gritting routes along a number of roads across the Swindon borough, including in roads in Stratton St Margaret- including Nythe Road, Bunce Road, Casson Road, Delamere Drive, Gifford Road, Godwin Road and Marshfield Way.

At the time the Council decided to cut these winter gritting routes Cllr Barrie Jennings was contacted by many concerned Stratton St Margaret residents and passed on their concerns to the Council.

Since then residents have been getting in touch with Barrie about inserting grit bins on roads that have lost their Council gritting service when the cold and dangerous weather arrives. However the Council have so far refused all requests for a new grit bin.

Stratton Parish Councillor & Labour St Margaret & South Marston Candidate, Barrie Jennings, said,“I have been surprised about how many people who have got in touch with me since the cold weather we had this year, about how much they missed the Council’s gritting service. The cold weather showed how unsafe some of Stratton St Margaret’s roads are without a gritting service or a grit bin.

When residents who lost their gritting service got in touch with me asking for a grit bin, I must admit that I thought that this was a small request that the Council would sort. Instead the Council has refused every single request. How do they expect residents to feel safe when we have dangerous, icy weather?

I keep being told these roads do not meet the Council’s criteria so I would like to see a new criteria that will at least provide grit bins for roads that have just lost their gritting service from the Council.”
