Call Goes Out to Make a Splash in Diabetes UK Challenge

Diabetes UK, a leading charity dedicated to fighting diabetes, is reaching out to the community in Swindon and Wiltshire to dive into a sponsored swimming challenge this spring.

The Swim22 initiative, spanning from 22nd March to 22nd June, invites participants to swim a total of 22 miles, mirroring the width of the English Channel. This unique challenge can be tackled at one’s own pace, whether in a local pool or the open water, with participants accumulating the miles over 12 weeks.

The funds raised through Swim22 will contribute to Diabetes UK’s crucial work, financing life-saving research and providing essential care and support for those living with diabetes.

Renowned actor and Diabetes UK supporter Annette Badland, known for her roles in EastEnders, Doctor Who, Midsomer Murders, and the Emmy award-winning comedy Ted Lasso, is urging individuals to embrace the challenge after completing it twice herself.

Annette expressed, “Diabetes UK’s Swim22 challenge is a fantastic way to find a fitter, more confident you. I know first-hand that swimming 22 miles over 12 weeks is no mean feat – but the sense of accomplishment you get at the end of the challenge is unmatchable.”

Phaedra Perry, Head of Diabetes UK – South West and South Central, said, “Whether you haven’t swum in a while or you’re a seasoned swimmer, our team will be on hand to offer swimming tips and fundraising advice along the way.”

Perry added, “By taking on Swim22, you’ll not only be swimming towards a healthier you. The money you raise will help fund our vital work, including the development of life-changing treatments and supporting people to live well with diabetes. So, please, sign up for Swim22 and make a splash for Diabetes UK.”

Participants can choose to swim in their local pool or the open water, alone or with family, friends, or colleagues. Besides the standard 22-mile challenge, there are two additional options: ‘The Half,’ covering 11 miles, and ‘The Double,’ an ambitious 44-mile swim, equivalent to a round trip to France.

Challengers stand a chance to earn fantastic rewards, including a Swim22 swimming cap, three unique distance medals, and a limited-edition towel for those who raise over £350.

To register for Swim22, interested individuals can visit swim22.diabetes.org.uk. There is no registration fee and no minimum sponsorship, making it accessible for all who wish to take part.
