Bus Companies Gear up for Swindon’s New Bus Interchange

Swindon’s main bus companies have expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming transformation of the town’s outdated bus station. The redevelopment of Fleming Way into a modern bus interchange is in its final stages, with the new facilities set to offer a vastly improved experience for commuters and residents alike.

The current bus station, built in the 1960s, has long been criticised for its deteriorating condition and lack of modern amenities. The new interchange will not only improve the travel experience but also create a more welcoming environment for all who use it. With solar-powered bus shelters featuring electronic screens, wireless phone charging, and improved toilet facilities, the new interchange promises to be a significant step forward. Among the upgrades, a Changing Places toilet will be included to ensure that everyone in Swindon can use the facilities when travelling.

As part of the ongoing development, passengers will benefit from an enhanced public realm, including the planting of more than 173 trees and 23,000 plants and shrubs. This green corridor will not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the area but will also support local wildlife and contribute to a cleaner environment. The trees and plants will be spread across Fleming Way and neighbouring public spaces, such as The Parade, making the walk between the town centre and bus and train stations far more pleasant.

Stagecoach West’s Commercial Director, Karen Coventry, shared her excitement about the project, stating: “We are thrilled to see the progress being made on the Fleming Way redevelopment. This transformation will significantly enhance the travel experience for our customers, providing them with a modern, efficient, and accessible bus interchange.”

Andrew Wickham, Managing Director at Swindon’s Bus Company, echoed this sentiment, adding: “The new interchange will be a vast improvement in terms of facilities and access to the town centre. This is a significant investment by Swindon Borough Council and will hopefully mark the start of even more positive changes for the town centre. We’re excited to see the impact this will have on reducing congestion and promoting a cleaner environment.”

Councillor Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, highlighted the importance of the project for the town’s regeneration. “The new bus interchange at Fleming Way will be a massive improvement on the current bus station, which is not welcoming for passengers. This modern public transport hub will be a gateway into the town centre and will play a key role in the ongoing regeneration of Swindon.”

With the project set to be completed next year, Swindon’s bus users can look forward to a more efficient and comfortable travel experience, while also contributing to a greener, more sustainable town.
