Bridlewood Primary School in Blunsdon Saint Andrew has earned the prestigious Intermediate level of the British Council’s International School Award, recognising the school’s outstanding efforts to promote international education and cultural understanding among its pupils.
The International School Award is a distinguished accolade that highlights schools excelling in fostering global awareness through cross-curricular activities, partnerships with schools overseas, and a commitment to preparing young people for life in an interconnected world. Bridlewood’s success is attributed to a range of impressive projects, including their collaboration with May Pen Primary School in Jamaica, which focused on the theme of ‘Reading for Pleasure’. The partnership has been lauded for encouraging cross-cultural exchange and enhancing students’ understanding of diverse traditions and cultures.
In addition, Bridlewood’s annual International Days provide a platform for the entire school to engage in a wide array of global-themed learning activities, helping students grasp the significance of worldwide issues while expanding their knowledge of history, geography, and foreign cultures. This holistic approach has made international education an integral part of Bridlewood’s ethos.
Vicky Sammon, Headteacher at Bridlewood Primary School, expressed her pride in the school’s achievement: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this award. It’s an honour for both the pupils and staff to be recognised for our international projects, which have not only deepened our students’ understanding of the world but have also ignited a passion for learning about different cultures, histories, and traditions.”
The British Council’s Head of UK Schools, Shannon West, congratulated the school for its hard work and dedication: “Bridlewood Primary School’s international work has been exceptional. Their collaborative projects with partner schools overseas bring the world into the classroom, providing pupils with invaluable experiences that will shape their futures as globally aware citizens.”
Since its inception in 1999, the International School Award has presented over 6,000 awards to schools across the UK. The award celebrates schools that instil an international ethos and encourage pupils to engage in global learning.
