On a misty June morning, twenty brave individuals pulled on their walking boots and set off on a mission far bigger than themselves – conquering the Yorkshire Three Peaks in support of Phoenix Enterprises, a Swindon charity that’s been quietly changing lives for over two decades.
The 24-mile trek, which scales Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough in under 12 hours, is not for the faint-hearted. But for the Phoenix team, this was about more than just the miles – it was about raising funds to help those facing the daily reality of mental health challenges, learning disabilities, and barriers to employment.

By Sunday morning, the total raised had topped £8,000 – and it’s still rising.
Phoenix Enterprises has been a cornerstone of support in Swindon since its founding. Tucked away on Cheney Manor Industrial Estate, the charity offers a stable, safe and welcoming work environment for adults who might otherwise be overlooked in the world of employment.
Clare McDougall, Chief Executive of Phoenix Enterprises, was full of admiration for the group:
“I cannot thank the brave hikers enough! There were several blisters and some tears, but without exception everyone was so proud of their achievement.”
The team was made up of Phoenix staff, supporters, and partners – including six employees from Zimmer Biomet, a global medical technology company. Not only did they complete the challenge, but Zimmer Biomet pledged to match every penny raised by their team members. Also walking were four staff from EPR Architects, who generously donated £150 per participant.
“We are so very grateful to both Zimmer Biomet and EPR Architects – their support means the world. These partnerships do more than raise money – they show belief in what we do,” Clare added.
One of the walkers, Verity Campbell, Community Engagement Champion at Zimmer Biomet, explained why they took part:
“It was a truly tough challenge, but we were determined to push ourselves because we believe in what Phoenix Enterprises stands for. Having volunteered in their warehouse, we’ve seen first-hand the impact they have on people’s lives.”
Every pound raised will go towards continuing Phoenix’s work – providing training, mentoring and practical opportunities for people working hard to turn their lives around.
Donations are still open for those wanting to show their support. Visit JustGiving – Yorkshire Three Peaks Team to contribute.
