More than 200 visitors were given a rare behind-the-scenes look at major construction projects across the South of England as part of Open Doors Week, an initiative hosted by construction firm Beard.
From cutting-edge digital surveying technology to hands-on bricklaying, attendees explored the many skills and disciplines that shape the built environment. The event highlighted career opportunities within construction through practical sessions, learning zones, and expert talks covering archaeology, architecture, and even zoology.
Showcasing Innovation and Skills
A standout moment for visitors to Bristol Zoo and Wadswick Green in Swindon was witnessing ‘SPOT the robot dog’ in action. This agile mobile robot, designed for terrain assessment and site inspections, demonstrated the role of automation in the future of construction.
At Bristol Zoo, experts from KOREC Group showcased advanced digital surveying tools, including the Trimble X9 Laser Scanner, Trimble Site Vision, and the Trimble S7 Total Station, illustrating how technology is revolutionising modern construction.
Beard welcomed guests to eight sites across its Swindon, Bristol, Oxford, Guildford, and Southampton offices, including:
- Bristol Zoo – Construction of a visitor centre, gorilla house, and landscaped outdoor forest area.
- Hertford College Library – A new basement library beneath the quad, Old Chapel, and West Range building, with structural support to protect historic elements.
- Hilsea Lido – Renovation of community facilities for Portsmouth City Council.
- Marlborough College Newton Building – Five new teaching laboratories and a physics preparation room.
- Phyllis Tuckwell Memorial Hospice – Construction of an 18-bedroom care facility.
- St John’s College, Pusey Lane – Conversion of garages and accommodation into 33 Passivhaus student residences.
- Swindon Health Hydro – Restoration of the Grade II* listed Health Hydro, including new plant rooms and gym space.
- Wadswick Green – Development of 45 luxury retirement apartments with communal facilities.
Encouraging the Next Generation
Paula Baleson, Beard’s social value manager, said: “We’re passionate about inspiring the next generation of construction workers, and Open Doors Week is an excellent opportunity to showcase the diverse roles available. This year, we doubled the number of participants from last year and held events at all five of our offices for the first time.
“This wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our site teams, consultants, and supply chain partners, who generously shared their time and expertise. A huge thank you to everyone involved.”
Fifteen schools and colleges brought students to the events, offering young people hands-on experience and insight into careers in construction. The sessions were also open to the public, giving local communities a chance to explore live construction sites.
Suzannah Nichol, Build UK Chief Executive, added: “Many young people don’t know what they want to do when they leave school, so we have a fantastic opportunity to spark their imagination and show them what they can achieve – whether they choose college, an apprenticeship, or university.
“Open Doors also welcomes career changers and members of the public to see a live construction project in their local community. We know the impact this can have and how powerful that first impression can be.”
