Supermarket giant Asda has announced a significant move towards a cashless payment system at 82 locations, including the petrol stations at West Swindon and The Orbital.
The company revealed that the shift to a “pay at pump” model is part of a broader strategy, with the intention of optimising resources and enhancing customer service.
The decision to go cashless means that all staff currently working at the affected fuel stations will be redeployed to Asda stores.
This move aligns with the company’s vision of adapting to changing consumer preferences, with over 90% of payments at superstore fuel station forecourts already being made via card or contactless devices.
Asda currently operates around 300 fuel forecourts attached to its superstores, with more than 150 of them already unmanned. The move towards a cashless system is specifically targeting forecourts located next to superstores.
A spokesperson for Asda stated, “The colleagues who worked on these sites are moving into the store so they can better serve our customers.”
The list of affected locations spans various regions, showcasing the widespread implementation of this cashless model. Alongside West Swindon and The Orbital, other locations include cities such as Birmingham, Colchester, Ipswich, Glasgow, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, and many more.
The move towards a “pay at pump” system is designed to streamline transactions, improve efficiency, and align with the increasing trend of digital payments. As technology continues to play a significant role in shaping consumer behavior, Asda aims to provide a convenient and seamless experience for its customers.
