Ascend Learning Trust which runs Lawn Manor Academy, Noremarsh Junior School, and the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy locally used its recent inset day to bring together staff from across the trust for a day of reflection, motivation, and inspiration.
Led by CEO Jane Coley, the event aimed to reinforce the trust’s values and vision, with special guests Gemma Powell and Lee Spencer adding their unique perspectives.

Opening the day’s proceedings, CEO Jane Coley reflected on the ongoing efforts to reshape the trust’s visions and values. She introduced the draft motto, “Together we Belong, Believe, Become,” setting the tone for a day focused on unity and growth within the trust.
The audience was captivated by Lee Spencer’s remarkable story of courage and determination. A former Royal Marine Commando, Spencer shared his journey of breaking Guinness World Records in solo ocean rowing despite facing physical challenges.
Lee broke the able-body record by 36 days and the longest solo and unsupported row by a physically disabled person. Furthermore he was the first physically disabled person to row from mainland Europe to mainland South America solo and unsupported.
Gemma Powell, Assistant Headteacher and Director of BRIYM (Building Resilience in Young Minds) delivered an insightful session on mental health resilience. Drawing from her experience as a trained therapist, Powell highlighted the importance of prioritising good mental health, managing stress, and gaining agency over one’s well-being.
Reflecting on the day’s events, CEO Jane Coley expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to lead Ascend Learning Trust into its next exciting phase of development. She talked about the importance of fostering a sense of belonging across the trust and reaffirmed the commitment to serving the community with integrity and vision.
