Councillor Oliver Donachie has just made the following announcement regarding the reopening of Akers Way. He wishes to inform everyone that Akers Way will be “open to all traffic on Wednesday 25th October. The road will be opened AFTER the evening peak traffic has passed.”
He goes on to say that he understands the frustration that the road closure has caused but also explains just how much work has been done to get the road ready for re-opening.
He states that 200 individual repairs were made to the concrete road base ranging from small patches to massive sections, 390 cubic meters of concrete was poured into the road structure as part of the structural patching design and 3.7 kilometres of new kerning has been laid.
The project has taken 10, 500 hours to complete and was undertaken by a contractor employing a local work force.
He also adds that “As cabinet member for Skills, I am personally most happy about the final point, we must support as much local trade as possible.” He also thanks everyone for their patience.

The first bit that was finished, driving on it is just like a rumble strip. That surely is not the finished thing. I would have thought it should be silky smooth, especially as it cost so much money! Or, is it going to be resurfaced again to make it smooth?
So does this mean the road will be open to Cheney Manor Industrial Estate for Thursday evening
