A man who led an alternative therapies workshop in Seend has been found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence following the death of one of his attendees.
Hongxhi Xiao, 61, of Cloudbreak, California, was convicted at Winchester Crown Court after a four-week trial for the death of Danielle Carr-Gomm, 71.
Danielle died after attending Xiao’s ‘Paida Lajin’ workshop at Cleeve House in Seend in October 2016. The workshop involved a three-day fast and the cessation of insulin treatment for type 1 diabetes, which was encouraged by Xiao.
Paida Lajin, a self-proclaimed ancient Chinese healing method, combines slapping and stretching techniques. Despite promoting it as a cure for various conditions, including diabetes, Xiao had no medical qualifications or experience.
Danielle’s health declined rapidly during the workshop and she was found dead in her room on the morning of October 20th, 2016. A post-mortem revealed that she died of diabetic ketoacidosis, a condition that arises when a person with type 1 diabetes stops taking insulin. Xiao was arrested the following day.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker of the Major Crime Investigation Team commented: “Xiao had no medical qualifications, yet he actively encouraged attendees to stop their regular medication, knowing the severe consequences. Danielle put her trust in Xiao, who was convincing in his beliefs. Unfortunately, Xiao’s breach of trust led to her health deteriorating swiftly, resulting in her tragic death.”
DCI Walker added: “This investigation was highly complex, involving significant medical expertise before Xiao could be extradited and brought to court. The delays, beyond our control, have added further challenges. Xiao’s lack of remorse, evidenced by his not guilty plea, has prolonged the distress for Danielle’s family.”
Danielle was remembered as a mother and grandmother with a love of travelling and life. Her sudden death shocked her family and friends, who remain in the thoughts of the investigation team.
Xiao is due to be sentenced at a later date.
