People affected by dementia in Swindon are being invited to share their experiences of diagnosis, care and support, amid concerns that more than 1,000 people living with the condition may not have received a formal diagnosis.
The Alzheimer’s Society is holding a community event in the town next month, giving people living with dementia, current and former carers, relatives and friends the opportunity to talk about their experiences and what they would like to see improved locally.
The event will take place at the Leonardo Hotel Swindon on Thursday, 10 September, from 10am to 1pm.
Latest NHS figures show that Swindon’s dementia diagnosis rate is 58.7 per cent, putting the borough among the bottom 20 per cent of local authorities in England and below the national target of 66.7 per cent.
Of the more than 2,600 people estimated to be living with dementia in Swindon, 1,557 have received a formal diagnosis.
That means more than 1,000 people could be living with dementia without a diagnosis – potentially missing out on advice, support and treatment.
The event is being organised by the Alzheimer’s Society as part of its ongoing work with the Swindon Dementia Action Alliance.
Those attending will be asked about their experiences of receiving a diagnosis, accessing treatment and care, and finding support.
The feedback will then be used to identify local priorities and inform discussions with Swindon Borough Council, NHS partners and other organisations responsible for dementia services.
Alison Clowes, Local Systems Influencing Manager at Alzheimer’s Society, said it was important to hear directly from people affected by dementia.
“Dementia affects thousands of people across Swindon, but too many people are still living without a diagnosis and the support that can bring,” she said.
“We want to hear directly from people affected by dementia about their experiences of getting a diagnosis, accessing care and finding support.
“Whether your experience has been positive or challenging, your voice can help shape conversations about how dementia support could be improved locally.”
She added: “By bringing together people with lived experience, we can help ensure local decision-makers understand what matters most to the people they serve.”
The morning will include tea and coffee on arrival, followed by a short welcome from the Alzheimer’s Society and small group discussions led by staff.
There will also be opportunities for attendees to share their experiences and find out how their feedback will be used.
The event is open to people living with dementia as well as current and former carers, family members and friends who have experience of dementia support in Swindon.
Places are limited and advance registration is required.
