As the summer sun shines brightly (hopefully), Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, will transform into an outdoor wonderland packed with exciting activities and adventures for families.
This summer, the arboretum invites visitors to step away from their screens and immerse themselves in nature’s playground.
From now until early September, families can enjoy an array of activities, all included in the admission fee. The highlight is the ‘Green Games’ family summer trail, running until 4th September. This engaging trail challenges visitors to locate eight interactive games that test both imagination and memory—perfect for a fun day out with loved ones.
For those seeking a mental challenge, the new ‘Escape Time at the Arboretum’ trail is launching soon. Visitors will need to solve clues and unravel puzzles to escape from the mythical Silk Wood time warp. This activity is ideal for older children and adults looking for a stimulating experience.
On 20th July, the ‘Music in Nature’ event at Silk Wood Barn will encourage families to discover the sounds of nature. Participants can make their own musical instruments using natural materials—an enjoyable and creative way to experience the arboretum.

The art of mud takes centre stage from 6 to 8 August with ‘Earth – The Art of Mud.’ Led by Pippa Pixley, a renowned artist and author, this event will delve into mud-based art and storytelling, providing a tactile and imaginative experience.
From 13th to 15th August, ‘Wind – Blown Away’ will focus on seeds dispersed by the wind. Attendees can explore different grasses with microscopes and see how far seeds can travel.

On 17th August, the ‘Fun with Sticks’ day will explore the ecosystems found on sticks. Visitors can use hand lenses to examine mosses and fungi, create willow butterflies, and whittle sticks into wands.
The ‘Sunshine & Shadows’ event from 20th to 22nd August will feature activities led by Justin Quinell, a world expert in pinhole photography. Participants can create images using turmeric and sunlight and craft their own shadow puppets.
Finally, from 27th to 29th August, ‘Water – Amazing Journeys’ invites families to engage with water-based activities. Challenges include designing and racing wooden rafts and learning about the water transport system of trees.
In celebration of the Gruffalo’s 25th anniversary, Westonbirt is hosting a special party trail throughout the summer. Families can search for missing party items and enjoy various games along the way. Trail packs are available for just £4 at the Welcome building or Westonbirt Shop.
