Advent Joy Brings Christmas Cheer to Wiltshire Children

Christmas came early for 300 children across Swindon and Wiltshire, thanks to a heartwarming initiative led by the charity Fighting Hunger with Food Waste.

The organisation, which redistributes surplus food from local supermarkets to support families in need, has brought festive smiles to young faces by donating advent calendars this December.

The effort was made possible through a generous £500 donation from Barratt David Wilson Homes South West. Volunteers used the funds to purchase the calendars, which were distributed to families across the county.

Shona Tomlinson, operational lead at the charity, expressed her appreciation: “We’re incredibly thankful for the ongoing support from Barratt David Wilson Homes South West. Their generosity allows us to bring some extra joy to children during the festive season.”

This marks the third year of collaboration between the charity and the housebuilder. Jimmy Gatica, assistant site manager for Barratt David Wilson Homes South West, has been instrumental in leading the initiative.

“For families facing financial challenges, an advent calendar may seem like a luxury,” Jimmy shared. “It’s a privilege to support this initiative and ensure every child can enjoy the magic of counting down to Christmas.”

Fighting Hunger with Food Waste works year-round, providing food and essentials to families, schools, foodbanks, and other organisations.

Barratt David Wilson Homes South West, a key partner in Swindon’s Wichelstowe development, has demonstrated its commitment to building more than just houses. The development, a joint project with Swindon Borough Council, includes homes, schools, community facilities, and green spaces, creating a vibrant and inclusive community.
