18-year-old Swindon burglar sentenced for multiple offences

A man has been sentenced after pleading guilty to various offences including burglary.

Reilly Payne, 18, of Millard Road, Swindon, appeared at Swindon Crown Court on Friday 6th October after admitting two counts of burgling houses and singular counts of possession of a prohibited weapon in a private place, driving whilst disqualified, driving a motor vehicle without insurance, aggravated taking a vehicle without consent and attempted theft of a motor vehicle.

He was sentenced to 21 months in a young offenders institution, disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver’s license for 18 months and required to pay a surcharge of £187.

On July 8 this year, Payne stole a vehicle from outside a property in Batsford Crescent after entering through a window to obtain the keys.

The vehicle was found in Bryans Close Road, Calne, after it was crashed into a parked vehicle.

On July 11, during the night, Payne broke into a property to steal a car key. He was spotted in the vehicle, at which point he fled. His property was searched a few days later, where the vehicle’s key and an extendable baton were found.

Payne was subsequently charged and remanded into custody.
DC Gary Bracey of the Force’s Burglary Unit said: “Payne has committed a wide range of serious offences which have had a considerable effect on his victims.

“Burglary is one of the most invasive crimes a person can commit.

“In one of the incidents, the victim was in the house asleep when Payne broke in.

“This can leave a lasting impact on the victim, affecting their ability to feel safe in the place they should feel most secure.

“Burglary is one of our Force priorities for these reasons.

“Payne was also fortunate to not cause any injuries when stealing the vehicles – he was both disqualified and driving without insurance.

“I hope this sentence means that Payne reflects on his actions and the pain he has caused and he will choose a different path in the future.”
