Music lovers in Swindon are in for a treat as two talented clarinetists, Chris Gibbons and Rae Todd, prepare to grace the stage of the Wyvern Theatre on Wednesday, 29th January at 1:05 pm.
The recital, part of the Swindon Recital Series, promises to deliver an enchanting blend of twentieth-century compositions, showcasing a diverse repertoire that spans from Hungarian folk tunes to minimalist and explosive modern works.
Chris and Rae will take audiences on a mesmerising journey, starting with Poulenc’s Sonata for Two Clarinets, one of the French composer’s final works before his untimely passing in 1963. The performance will also feature Marc Mellits’ Black, a dynamic and playful composition written in a minimal style, alongside Király László’s evocative Hungarian Folk Songs. Adding to the magic, the duo will perform pieces by Beethoven, Crusell, and the renowned Richard Rodney Bennett.
Tickets are affordably priced at £9 for adults, with discounts available for students aged 15-18 at £3.50. Accompanied children aged 14 and under can attend free of charge, making this a wonderful opportunity for families to experience world-class chamber music.
Meet the Performers
Chris Gibbons is a Cardiff-based clarinetist, conductor, and educator. Having studied at Cardiff University and the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), Chris graduated with distinction in his MMus and further honed his skills with advanced studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD). With a rich career that includes performances with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and London Sinfonietta, Chris brings a wealth of experience to his craft. He is also a passionate educator, currently teaching at Marlborough College, QEH in Bristol, and Wycliffe College in Gloucestershire.
Rae W. Todd is a freelance musician and independent researcher with a Ph.D. from the University of Hull. Rae continued his clarinet studies at the RWCMD, where he worked with esteemed tutors and performed with leading ensembles such as the Welsh National Opera and the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra. Rae’s chamber music highlights include appearances at the Lincolnshire International Chamber Music Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
