The Swindon Recital Series returns this autumn with a special programme of chamber music by Mozart and Brahms, performed by acclaimed musicians Carol Hubel-Allen (viola), David Campbell (clarinet) and Paul Turner (piano).
The concert opens with Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio, composed in 1786 in Vienna for clarinet, viola and piano – the very first work written for this instrumental combination. Mozart originally wrote the piece for a piano pupil to perform at a family gathering, with the composer himself taking the viola part. Albert Einstein once described the trio’s concluding rondo as “singing from beginning to end”.
The programme also includes Brahms’ Clarinet Sonatas, his final chamber works, composed in 1894 and premiered the following year in Vienna. Still debated by musicians and scholars today, Brahms himself offered alternative versions of the sonatas for clarinet and viola. This concert offers audiences a rare opportunity to compare both interpretations live, performed by master musicians.
