Swindon Photographic Society is ready to snap into action for its new season, kicking off with a Welcome Night on Thursday 4th September 2025 at the Des Moffatt Western Community Centre in Rodbourne.
Founded back in 1898, the society has long been a cornerstone of the town’s photography scene. Its mission has remained the same for well over a century – to encourage and share the enjoyment of photography, no matter your level of experience.
Meetings take place both in the clubroom and out on location, with some sessions also available via Zoom. Last year alone, members had the chance to take part in around nine different gatherings a month, ranging from talks by guest speakers and international salons to competitions judged by visiting experts. Practical evenings offer hands-on learning, while a mix of themed nights keeps things fresh and varied.
The society also runs four thriving Special Interest Groups (SIGs) – Landscape, Street, Portrait, and Analogue. Each is led by members and organises its own trips, portrait shoots with models, and review sessions online. Whether it’s capturing a dramatic sunset, the energy of urban life, or the artistry of film photography, there’s something for every creative taste.
A members-only WhatsApp group keeps the conversation going between meetings, sharing tips, arranging outings, and even sorting out lifts to events.
The club prides itself on being welcoming to all – from complete beginners picking up a camera for the first time to seasoned photographers with years of experience. It’s this mix of skills and perspectives that keeps the society vibrant and constantly evolving.
The Welcome Night starts at 7.30pm on 4th September and offers a relaxed chance to meet members, learn about the club’s activities, and get involved.
