Fancy swapping the modern world for the dance floor of the 1930s? Swindon’s Town Gardens Bowl is inviting people to do just that as it celebrates its 90th anniversary with a special Lindy Hop workshop this month.
Step Back in Time takes place on Sunday, 16 August, offering adults the chance to enjoy an hour of music, movement and swing-era fun at the historic venue.
The workshop will be led by Swindon Dance’s Zoe Humphries and is designed to be welcoming to everyone, regardless of dancing experience. Participants will learn some easy-to-follow Lindy Hop-inspired movements while enjoying the infectious sounds and atmosphere of the swing era.
Lindy Hop emerged in the 1930s and became one of the defining dances of the swing era, known for its energetic movements, improvisation and sense of fun.
There is no need to arrive with a dance partner either. The workshop is all about getting involved, meeting people and enjoying the experience, making it an ideal opportunity for those who have always fancied trying something new but never quite made it onto the dance floor.
The event is part of celebrations marking 90 years of the Town Gardens Bowl, a venue which has provided generations of Swindonians with a place to enjoy music, entertainment and community events.
Councillor John Firmin, Chair of South Swindon Parish Council’s Events Working Party, said: “The Town Gardens Bowl has been bringing people together through music, entertainment and shared experiences for 90 years, so it’s wonderful to mark the anniversary with an activity that gets people up and moving.
“Step Back in Time is a great opportunity to try something completely different, learn some Lindy Hop-inspired moves and have fun in this special setting.”
Tickets cost just £3 per person, making the workshop an inexpensive way to join the Town Gardens Bowl’s anniversary celebrations.
So whether you’re an experienced dancer or someone whose dancing usually begins and ends when nobody is looking, Step Back in Time offers a chance to get involved and enjoy a little taste of the 1930s.
