The Wyvern Theatre’s Summer Youth Project (SYP) has once again proven why it remains a beloved Swindon tradition, now in its 30th year.
This year’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid not only showcases the incredible talent of over 120 performers under the age of 21 but also highlights the spirit and professionalism that have become the hallmark of this annual event.
Remarkably, these young performers have put together a production worthy of the West End, and they’ve done so in just two weeks.
The Summer Youth Project began in 1994 with Bugsy Malone, providing young people with the chance to work in a professional theatre environment. Over the years, the project has been home to countless young talents, many of whom return year after year to take part.
This year’s cast of The Little Mermaid did not disappoint. Leading the charge was Louise Aust as Ariel, in her final SYP performance. Louise’s portrayal of the iconic mermaid was nothing short of mesmerising, her vocals soaring effortlessly across the theatre and delivering a performance that was both heartfelt and powerful.
Bethany Tunley returned this year, following her impressive showing in 2023, to once again shine—this time as the loveable Scuttle. Her energy lit up the stage, capturing the audience’s attention with every scene. Meanwhile, Toby Barton brought a delightful dose of humour as Chef Louis.
However, the standout performance for me was Lottie Waller as Ursula. Commanding the stage with a presence and vocal prowess beyond her years, Lottie’s portrayal of the sea witch was nothing short of show-stopping. The confidence, and sheer talent displayed in her performance would have been right at home in the West End!
While these leads were impressive, it’s important to note the overall strength and commitment of the entire ensemble. The enthusiasm, commitment, and energy radiated from every corner of the stage and along the aisles and steps of the Wyvern auditorium. For some of these young actors, this was their first time participating in the Summer Youth Project, yet they performed with a confidence that suggested a much deeper experience. There is little doubt that many of these emerging talents will grace the Wyvern stage for years to come, following in the footsteps of seasoned project performers like Louise, Lottie, Toby, and Bethany.
In conclusion, the Wyvern Theatre’s Summer Youth Project has once again delivered a production that exceeds all expectations. The Little Mermaid is a joyous, vibrant, and professional show that showcases the very best of Swindon’s young talent.
