PR expert and former newspaper reporter Fiona Scott has turned back the clock in her new memoir, Tales of a Backwater Journalist, launched at the View Gallery (part of RWB Auctions).
The book takes readers through Fiona’s early years in local journalism across Swindon and Somerset, sharing the defining moments that led her to the newsroom—and nearly kept her from it.
As a teenager in Somerset, Fiona experienced a pivotal moment watching a news crew at work. Despite her mother’s doubts that she was “too sensitive” for the trade and advice steering her toward more traditional roles, Fiona knew journalism was her calling.
Initially following a safe path into teaching, she made a bold decision to abandon it all—quitting her job, cancelling her wedding, and starting fresh as a reporter.
Now, after more than 38 years in journalism, Fiona reflects on the highs and lows of her career, from front-page triumphs to personal challenges. The memoir is filled with behind-the-scenes stories, local characters, and the lessons she learned along the way.
Tales of a Backwater Journalist follows her first book, The Hard Yards, which chronicled her first decade as an entrepreneur and founder of Scott Media, a Swindon-based PR and marketing consultancy helping small businesses and entrepreneurs tell their stories.
The new book is available now in paperback and on Kindle via Amazon for £18.
