Hundreds of primary school children across Swindon are set to receive a free bedtime story book as part of a new schools project celebrating the town’s Year of Reading.
More than 550 children will take home a brand-new book through The Bedtime Story Experiment, a project created by local author Kate Claxton in partnership with The Festival of Tomorrow.
The initiative, which begins visiting primary schools in February, blends storytelling with simple science ideas to spark curiosity, creativity and a positive relationship with reading. It aims to show children that books can be enjoyable and imaginative, rather than something they feel obliged to read.
The workshops are delivered by Kate Claxton and are built around her latest book, The Good Ship Bed. Each session ends with every child receiving their own copy of the book, helping families continue a calming bedtime routine at home.
The free books have been made possible through sponsorship from Swindon Travel Hub, with additional support from the National Literacy Trust.
Kate Claxton said the project was about more than simply handing out books.
“This is about opening doors to imagination and helping children see stories as something exciting,” she said. “Bedtime reading can be a special moment, and being able to share that during the Year of Reading makes this project particularly meaningful.”
Swindon Travel Hub, an independent travel agency based in Old Town, has played a central role in supporting the initiative, highlighting the impact local businesses can have within the community.
Co-owner Shaun Jones said: “We’re really proud to help place books directly into the hands of children in Swindon. The stories are full of adventure and travel, which reflects what we’re passionate about.
“Encouraging a love of reading from a young age benefits everyone, and we’re delighted to support something that inspires the next generation.”
The project has also been strengthened through backing from the National Literacy Trust, which works to improve literacy levels and promote equal access to reading for children from all backgrounds.
The Bedtime Story Experiment forms part of a wider programme taking place during The Festival of Tomorrow, a month-long celebration of science, innovation and the arts across Swindon throughout February.
Schools taking part can access a range of free workshops, shows and challenges, with other schools encouraged to register their interest via The Festival of Tomorrow website.
