Out of the twenty-three music events that I wrote about in my wide ranging and all inclusive gig guide for another paper, only three of those were based on original music. Now I know that it is all about supply and demand, but that still seems like a creative imbalance to me, new music seems to have become the vegetarian option or the second language of the artistic world. I know there is nothing I can do about it, I know I am just a musical remoaner faced with a majority who have decided to move in a new direction, but its my article and I’ll cry if I want to. Still, all is not quite lost yet, there are a couple of fantastic offerings on the horizon and these choice cuts to whet your appetite till then.
Thursday
Kent DuChaine @ The Beehive
If you are tired of watching acts from this side of the water purport to be blues and delivering soulless, sub rock workouts, or poppy and commercial blues-light, then Kent DuChaine is your man. Based in the heart of the south, Georgia to be exact, and armed with the ultimate blues weapon, his 1934, National Steel Guitar which goes under the name of Leadbessie, once you have heard him play that first few notes you know that this is the real deal. Authentic, soulful and heartfelt.
Friday
Ghost of Machines, This Dying Hour and Fall From Ruin @ The Victoria
As we head into the weekend proper you will find Ghost of Machines heading a night of alt-rock at The Victoria. Known for a slick brand of dystopian rock fusing the technicality of progressive metal with the onslaught of grunge, they lead a creative charge that also includes the message driven poignancy of This Dying Hour and the grunge-goth-metal hybrid that is Mouri. Opening the night are new kids on the rock and roll block, Fall From Ruin.
Saturday
The Dirty Outlaws + Minestone of Sound DJ’s @ The Castle
A dose of short, sharp musical shock treatment can be found at The Castle as punk and Oi! trio The Dirty Outlaws provide a hi-octane, energetic and edgy soundtrack. The fantastically named Minestrone of Sound DJ’s will also be spinning some fab and groovy waxings of a punk, ska and reggae nature.
