The legacy of one of Swindon’s most iconic figures, celebrated heavy metal artist Steve Grimmett, will be immortalised later this year in a festival fit for a metal legend.
Steve Grimmett, renowned as the producer, songwriter, and frontman of the globally acclaimed metal band Grim Reaper, will be honoured at the one-day Wings of Angels Festival. The event takes its name from the lead track of the band’s 2018 album, “Walking in the Shadows.”
As pioneers of the New Wave British Heavy Metal movement that swept the globe in the 1980s, Grim Reaper spearheaded a musical revolution. Steve, who sold over a million albums, is revered as one of heavy metal’s greatest vocalists. His influence stretched far and wide, with devoted followers across Europe, the USA, South America, and Japan.
Following his passing in August 2022, Steve’s wife Millie is orchestrating the Wings of Angels Festival to commemorate his life and meet the fervent demand from his global fanbase for a final farewell.
The festival promises an electrifying lineup of guest singers performing hits from Steve’s extensive repertoire, alongside bands with a profound connection to his music. Former WASP Guitarist Chris Holmes is set to headline the event.
Millie Grimmett expressed, “Steve’s essence was heavy metal. He found immense joy in gracing the stage, connecting with fans, and crafting music. It’s only fitting that the Wings of Angels Festival honours his legacy through an epic showcase of metal acts from near and far. We anticipate a sold-out festival, brimming with incredible music, and a fitting celebration of Steve’s remarkable life.”
In addition to his illustrious discography spanning from 1979 to 2022, Steve’s impact extended to popular culture in the 1990s, with Grim Reaper’s tracks featuring on the MTV animation “Beavis and Butt-Head.”
Throughout his illustrious 45-year career, Steve shared the stage with music titans including Judas Priest, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, and Deep Purple. He even garnered consideration as the potential new vocalist for Iron Maiden at one point.
Millie added, “Steve’s musical legacy has resonated worldwide, drawing admirers from all corners of the globe to join us in Swindon, UK, for Wings of Angels. The outpouring of love and support on our social media platforms, with people sharing stories and memories, is truly heartwarming. It underscores the profound impact Steve had on shaping the metal scene across several decades.”
Wings of Angels will rock Swindon’s MECA on Friday, 23rd November. Tickets are available online at wingsofangelsfest.com.
