A unique opportunity has been unveiled for aspiring young artists as Kelmscott Manor teams up with Signal Festival to offer a week-long residency this July, set against the backdrop of one of Britain’s most historic creative homes.
Open to those aged 18 to 25, the Kelmscott Young Artist in Residence scheme invites emerging creatives to spend five days at the Oxfordshire manor house once home to William Morris – the celebrated designer, writer, and social reformer.
Running from 21st to 25th July, the residency aims to provide time, space, and inspiration for a new generation of artists, allowing them to explore their craft in a setting steeped in design heritage and artistic legacy. The initiative includes a £500 stipend, generously supported by The Arts Society Upper Thames, to assist with travel, materials, or lost earnings.
This opportunity forms part of Kelmscott Manor’s ongoing mission to ensure that the creative values of William Morris remain active and relevant today – championing fresh ideas, accessibility in the arts, and social engagement. Signal Festival’s involvement continues its work in nurturing emerging talent in Swindon, creating accessible pathways for young people to develop as professional artists.
Councils, curators and creatives alike have welcomed the move, which aims to deepen the region’s cultural fabric by linking heritage with contemporary practice.
Applicants must submit their interest via an information and application pack, which can be downloaded online. Originally set to close earlier in the month, the deadline has now been extended to Thursday 19th June, giving more young people a chance to apply.
