Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre has once again secured the backing of local business as Coatstone Surfacing confirms its sponsorship of this year’s eagerly anticipated Summer Youth Project, Annie.
The long-running community initiative, which has now become a fixture of Swindon’s cultural calendar, will see more than 100 local youngsters bring the much-loved musical to life this August. For Coatstone Surfacing, this marks the second consecutive year of support, further strengthening its ties to the town’s thriving arts scene.
Joe McGarvie, Managing Director of Coatstone Surfacing, shared his pride in backing the project: “Supporting the Summer Youth Project is always incredibly rewarding.
“Watching these young people grow in confidence, work together and develop their talents is something very special. As a company rooted in this community, we’re proud to help give these youngsters the platform to shine both on stage and beyond.”
The Summer Youth Project has been an integral part of the Wyvern Theatre’s creative programme since its first production of Bugsy Malone back in 1994. Over three decades, it has nurtured countless local talents, with many former participants going on to forge careers in theatre, education and the arts.
Oli Webb, Creative Learning Manager at Swindon Theatres, praised the ongoing partnership:
“We’re extremely fortunate to have Coatstone Surfacing supporting us once again. Over the years, this project has seen West End performers, university graduates, teachers, and stage managers begin their journeys here. It’s a privilege to be part of something that brings so much to the community.”
This year’s production of Annie promises to captivate audiences with its uplifting story set in 1930s New York. The tale follows young Annie as she escapes a harsh orphanage life under the watchful eye of Miss Hannigan, only to find hope when invited into the home of billionaire Oliver Warbucks. But Miss Hannigan’s scheming threatens to derail Annie’s pursuit of happiness.
Audiences can expect all the memorable numbers, including It’s The Hard Knock Life, Easy Street, I Don’t Need Anything But You and, of course, the iconic Tomorrow.
Under the guidance of a professional creative team, up to 200 young performers aged 9 to 21 will take part in two weeks of intense rehearsals, culminating in five full-scale performances. The curtain will rise on Wednesday 14 August and run until Saturday 16 August 2025.
For those eager to support Swindon’s next generation of performers, tickets are available via the Wyvern Theatre website.
