Swindon Arts Centre will be buzzing with nostalgia and laughter as Looking For Me Friend: The Music of Victoria Wood takes to the stage this Sunday, 6th October 2024 at 7:30pm.
The heartfelt celebration, written and performed by cabaret star Paulus, brings 21 of Victoria Wood’s iconic songs to life, making for a joyful yet poignant evening that honours one of Britain’s most beloved comedians.
Audiences can expect a fast-paced journey through Wood’s career, filled with her witty lyrics, unique observations, and touching moments. Songs such as The Ballad of Barry & Freda (Let’s Do It) will undoubtedly be familiar to fans, but the show also features lesser-known gems, showcasing the breadth of Wood’s songwriting talent.
Paulus, known as ‘The Cabaret Geek’, is joined on stage by pianist Michael Roulston (Fascinating Aïda), whose expert playing complements the energy of the performance. “I couldn’t do this show on my own,” Paulus remarks. “Michael’s like Julie Walters to my Victoria. There’s a lot of back-and-forth, and sometimes the audience even joins in!”
However, this is no simple tribute act. “I’m not impersonating Victoria,” Paulus says. “It’s a celebration of someone I really loved and miss, and I think audiences will feel that warmth.”
Reflecting on his first encounter with Wood’s comedy, Paulus recalls watching As Seen on TV as a child with his family. “Victoria made all of us laugh, from my 18-year-old sister to my mum in her forties. That cross-generational humour is so rare.”
The show isn’t just about the laughter; there’s a deeper significance for Paulus, who credits Victoria Wood with inspiring him as a performer and a person. “She made my mum laugh, and for that alone, I’ll always be grateful. This show is my way of saying thank you.”
The tour has been running for five years now, and Paulus has been overwhelmed by the positive reactions from audiences. “People come up to me after shows to say I’ve told their life story. That’s the magic of Victoria—she created a space for anyone who felt different, and that’s something I try to carry forward in this show.”
