Swindon’s Wyvern Theatre will host a special performance on Wednesday, March 19th at 1.05 pm, showcasing two exceptional works for cello and piano. The talented duo of Julian Metzger (cello) and Paul Turner (piano) will present a thrilling programme featuring Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata and Martinů’s 3rd Cello Sonata.
Prokofiev’s Cello Sonata, written in 1949 during a time when much of his music was banned, carries a deep emotional weight. The sonata opens with a powerful solo cello line before contrasting lyrical melodies with sharper, more dramatic moments, ultimately resolving in a mellow conclusion. The piece was premiered in 1950 at the Moscow Conservatory after Prokofiev’s works were auditioned and approved by the Composers Union and Radio Committee.
On the other hand, Martinů’s 3rd Cello Sonata, known for its jazz influences mixed with his Bohemian roots, offers a vibrant and dramatic performance. The outer movements are infused with lively jazz rhythms, while the central movement showcases lush, romantic melodies, capturing the heart of the composer’s expressive style.
This exciting performance brings together two celebrated musicians with vast experience. Julian Metzger’s multifaceted career as a soloist, chamber musician, and teacher has seen him delight audiences around the world with his captivating cello performances. Paul Turner, an accomplished pianist with many prizes to his name, is known for his masterful accompaniment, which promises to add an extra layer of elegance to this performance.
Tickets for the concert are priced at £9 for adults, with a special £3.50 ticket for students aged 15-18. Children aged 14 and under can enjoy the concert for free when accompanied by an adult.
