Originally debuting in 1989, Buddy is widely credited as the first ‘jukebox musical,’ a genre that has since inspired countless imitations but few equals.

Over the years, this show has broken records, boasting an astonishing 4,900 performances across 614 weeks on tour in the UK and Ireland, alongside 5,822 performances over 728 weeks in London’s West End. The musical has been seen by more than 22 million people, cementing its place as an enduring theatrical phenomenon.

Featuring a dynamic cast of actor-musicians, Buddy delivers a high-octane evening packed with over 20 of Holly’s greatest hits, including unforgettable tunes like That’ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, and Oh Boy. The setlist also includes tributes to other Rock & Roll legends, with songs like Ritchie Valens’ La Bamba and the Big Bopper’s Chantilly Lace, ensuring two hours of non-stop foot-tapping fun.

The story follows Buddy Holly’s meteoric rise from a young rockabilly artist to global superstardom, right up until his final performance at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, before his tragic death at just 22 years old. This event, immortalised in Don McLean’s American Pie as ‘the day the music died,’ marked the end of a brief yet ground-breaking career that would go on to influence generations of musicians, from The Beatles to Bob Dylan.

Executive Producer Alan Janes reflects on the show’s longevity, “It really is incredible. Over 35 years since we first opened, the show is still spreading joy to every corner of the country. This is testament to a wonderful, extremely talented cast and some of the finest Rock & Roll tunes ever written by the one and only Buddy Holly.”

Having inspired a wave of jukebox musicals, Buddy remains a true original. Don’t miss your chance to experience the magic of this legendary production when it arrives in Swindon.
