Audiences can look forward to an afternoon of chamber music this autumn as the Ward Quartet, joined by pianist Paul Turner, perform piano quintets by Brahms and Shostakovich at the Swindon Arts Centre on Sunday, November 23rd at 3pm.
Brahms’ 1893 piano quintet, written for two violins, viola, cello and piano, remains one of the best-loved works in the chamber repertoire. Its sweeping expressiveness moves from serenity to storm, with a surprising passage that foreshadows the rhythms of the jazz age.
The programme also features Shostakovich’s 1940 quintet—composed during the Soviet era on the eve of World War II. Instantly popular with the public (“it was discussed in trams”), it remains one of his most enduring works, noted for its charm, clarity, and vitality.
Performers: Nicholas Ward (violin), Kathryn Parry (violin), Wendy Gudgin (viola), Harriet Bennett (cello), Paul Turner (piano).
