Alison Larkin Brings Her Widely Acclaimed Show ‘Grief …A Comedy’ to Swindon Arts Centre

Swindon is set to host an evening of laughter, introspection, and poignant storytelling as internationally celebrated writer and comedian Alison Larkin brings her latest show, Grief …A Comedy, to the Swindon Arts Centre on 21st September.

Fresh from a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe, Larkin’s performance promises to be an extraordinary blend of humour and heartache, with this unique production, described as “improbably funny” and “life-affirming.”

Alison Larkin’s name is synonymous with wit, versatility, and a unique perspective that bridges her English roots and American experiences. Often referred to as the “English American,” Larkin has long captivated audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Her career spans writing, comedy, acting, and narration, with each aspect of her work deeply influenced by her life’s rich tapestry. Her debut solo show and bestselling novel, The English American, drew from her personal journey as an adopted child raised in a quintessentially British household, who later reunited with her birth mother in Tennessee.

However, it is her latest show that perhaps marks Larkin’s most personal and powerful work to date. Grief …A Comedy was born from profound loss and the unexpected joy that followed. After finding true love in her 50s with Bhima, an Indian climate scientist, Larkin’s world was shattered just five days after their engagement when Bhima passed away. Faced with overwhelming grief, Larkin drew strength from the words of her friend, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who encouraged her to turn her tragedy into a source of hope and healing for others.

“Grief …A Comedy” is a testament to Larkin’s resilience and her ability to find light in the darkest of places. With a soundtrack composed by the Emmy award-winning Gary Schreiner, the show delivers a life-affirming message wrapped in Larkin’s signature humour. The performance promises to leave audiences laughing, crying, and ultimately, reflecting on the incredible strength it takes to rebuild a life after loss.

Alison Larkin’s multifaceted career is a testament to her exceptional talent. She has narrated over 280 audiobooks, including the highly regarded Complete Novels of Jane Austen, and graced stages from The Comic Strip in New York to The Comedy Store in Los Angeles. As an actress, she has left her mark on both Broadway and West End, and her voice work includes roles in Grand Theft Auto 5 and Fargo. Her latest podcast, Love and Laughter after 50 with Alison Larkin, continues to expand her global influence.

For those attending her Swindon show, a special treat awaits. A limited advance edition of Larkin’s new book, also titled Grief …A Comedy, will be available exclusively after the performance.

Don’t miss the chance to experience this one-of-a-kind show that promises to be as uplifting as it is hilarious. Tickets are available now at the Arts Centre website for the 21st September performance.
