Premier League referee Roger East is to attend a charity football tournament being held at The Oakfield Stadium, Melksham on Sunday 19 May.
Wiltshire Police, alongside the Wiltshire Black Police Association and Wiltshire County FA, are running the tournament in collaboration with the Kickoff@3 charity.
Mr East, who has been refereeing in the Premier League since 2012, said: “I look forward to returning to my home county to support such a great initiative that aims to get young people involved in sport and interacting positively with the police.
“Being a Premier League referee often means my schedule is very busy but I always try to make time to support worthwhile causes and initiatives such as this.
“I hope to see some of the footballer’s of the future in action and hopefully I won’t need to brandish any red or yellow cards on the day!”
Sgt Ronnie Lungu, from the Diversity and Inclusion Team at Wiltshire Police, said: “I’m really excited to be working with Kickoff@3 in bringing this football tournament to Wiltshire for the first time.
“It’s a brilliant opportunity for the police to engage with young people through sport and for them to see us in a different light. We hope the tournament will act as a platform to break down barriers and encourage greater confidence in the Force too.
“I also want to thank Roger for giving up his valuable time to support our tournament. I know that the young people are very excited to meet him and hear his experiences about refereeing some of the world’s top footballers”.
Following a recent change of location the tournament will now be held at The Oakfield Stadium, Melksham.
The 7-a-side tournament will consist of two separate age groups, 13-14 and 15-16 year-olds, with teams being mixed gender. The winners of each age group will also go on to represent Wiltshire at the national finals in South London on 7 July 2019.
There are still a couple of spaces available to play in the tournament. If you work with young people or know of any organisation that would be interested in entering a team, please contact Thomas Ridley, Tactical Crime Prevention Officer, on Thomas.firstname.lastname@example.org register your interest.
