Tonight’s rare ‘Super Blood Wolf Moon’ display is expected to look stunning – some though will tell you it is a sign then the end of the world is nigh!
The Super blood wolf moon will take place in the early hours on Monday morning creating a spectacular red moon.
The rare astronomical display is a combination of a supermoon and a lunar eclipse, and will see the moon turn a stunning shade of red.
The moon will be visible without the need of any expensive equipment, reports the Mirror Online.
What is a supermoon?
A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon reaching perigee, which is the point of the orbit where the moon is closest to Earth.
The point farthest from Earth is known as apogee.
Full moons appear around 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter when the phenomenon occurs, according to NASA.
The changes are hard to spot with the naked eye when the moon is high in the sky, but can cause dramatic impact as the moon rises or sets in the sky.
What is a Blood Moon?
During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks the light from the sun and the surface of the moon instead takes on a red or orange glow.
This is due to an effect called Rayleigh scattering. The same phenomenon creates red sunrises and sunsets and makes the sky blue.
It’s caused by the way rays of sunlight are sometimes bounced off course as they travel towards us. Short wavelengths such as violet and blue are scattered when they hit the atmosphere, while longer wavelengths like red and orange pass through and reach the Earth.
The red and orange light is then refracted or bent around the Earth and hits the moon on the other side, giving it this eerie colour.
What is wolf moon?
Early Native American tribes named the first full moon of the year after the wolf, as this was the time of year when packs of the animal would howl outside their camps.
Why could it be the end of the world?
Some Christians in the USA believe the Super Blood Wolf Moon is an ill omen and a harbinger of doom. Some even say it could be a sign that The End Times, as prophesied in The Bible’s Book of Revelations, are upon us – guess we will know if they are correct soon enough.
