Theresa May has announced her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the UK as of Friday 7th June.
May will be continuing as head of the government until a new leader has been chosen.
The Conservative party leader election is expected to be concluded in the next six to eight weeks.
How will the Conservative leadership election work?
The Conservative party leadership contest will take place in two stages.
The first, Conservative MPs put their name forward.
Second, once there is a shortlist of candidates, MPs will vote in a series of rounds. The candidate with the lowest number of votes in each round is removed from the running.
The final two candidates are then put to the party membership.
