Proposals to create a vibrant new community at Lotmead, Wanborough, took a major step forward today as an application for the development was submitted to Swindon Borough Council.

The proposals for Lotmead Villages, which will form part of the New Eastern Villages included in Swindon’s adopted Local Plan, have been put forward by ASL, the development company promoting the site.

They include the construction of up to 2,500 homes, two two-form entry primary schools, a sports hub with playing pitches and changing facilities, and a site-wide network of open space with strategic landscaping and other green infrastructure.

The planning application also includes two village centres, one at Lotmead and one at Lower Lotmead, which will provide floorspace for early years activities, shops and café/restaurant facilities.

The proposals also include indicative primary access road corridors to the A420, and improvements and widening along Wanborough Road for pedestrian, cycle and bus access.

The proposals will not affect the Pick Your Own and other activities that are based at Lotmead Farm.

During the development stage of the current proposals, ASL have worked closely with Officers at Swindon Borough Council evolving the design and layout of the development in response to their discussions.

ASL also met with a range of stakeholders, and held a public consultation event including an exhibition of the plans, to enable their team of specialists to share the proposals and to respond to comments and ideas.

ASL’s Planning Director, John Brooks, said, “Since 2012 we have had a vision of creating a genuinely vibrant community at Lotmead where people can experience a high quality of life, enjoying wide open space, leisure and sports facilities, and with easy access to shops, cafes and community meeting places where they can meet and get to know each other.

“We have taken on board the earlier findings of the Planning Inspector, Secretary of State, stakeholders and of course Swindon Borough Council, and worked closely with officers to adjust the plans and proposals so that they meet their expectations and aspirations.

“It has felt like a genuinely collaborative process, and we are hopeful that these new proposals will meet with the planning committee’s approval.

“This development forms part of one of the most significant residential construction projects in the country, and will help Swindon meet the requirement for additional new housing that it has identified in its Local Plan.”
