Phoenix Enterprises is a Swindon based charity that supports local people with learning difficulties and mental health conditions and wherever possible helps them back into the workplace. Being a member of the Phoenix family means learning new skills, fine tuning existing skills and also having fun.

So, with Christmas and New Year celebrations over, January seems a great time to launch a new series of activities and courses to counter what can be a long and lack lustre month.

We cover important issues around money management and budgeting, positive and safe relationships and for those with energy to spare we have a boxing taster session -with thanks to Scrappers Gym for this activity. The recently formed Phoenix football team will take to the pitch in 2019 proudly wearing a new kit generously sponsored by local recruitment business Aligra.

For those seeking a gentler approach to fitness we are starting a lunch time walking club. Healthy tasty and economical food purchasing and meal preparation ideas also feature in a determined attempt to reduce reliance on fast food and ready meals. We recently held a quiz and were all amazed just how much sugar is contained in cans of well known fizzy drinks.

Our healthy breakfast club continues due to the kind funding from The Souter Charitable Trust. Other talks covering issues around smoking, alcohol, drugs, sexual health, weight and dental hygiene will hopefully help all the Phoenix family live healthier lives.

Our first event was a visit last Saturday to the Link Centre to watch the Swindon Wildcats Ice Hockey defeat The Milton Keynes Thunder. We thank, Steve Nell, the Wildcats owner for his continued generosity.

Chair of Trustees Emma Rees said, “I’m really proud of the range of courses and activities we’ve arranged for January. We are always looking for new ideas to support the development of our service users as well as having fun. All these good things require funding and I’m grateful for recent donations from Warburtons Bakers, Thomas Wall Trust, Marjorie Viggars Charitable Trust and Zurich Community Trust. We have an Open Day on 18th January and we hope to meet local people and their families who might like to see what we have to offer.”
