Great Western Academy, Swindon’s newest secondary school, opens for the first time on Wednesday 5th September.
The new school is based in brand new facilities in Tadpole Garden Village to the north of Swindon.
The Year 7 cohort from the local area will start their secondary school journey full of anticipation and expectation.
The vision of GWA has been summarised as having three key areas; Achievement, Care and Excellence. High aspirations in each of these areas filter through all aspects of the school, from the outstanding teaching staff that have been recruited to the curriculum being taught and the facilities and resources available.
The curriculum has been designed to ensure excellent academic progress for all and also focusses on enabling enterprise skills to help students to become lifelong learners and to prepare them for their future career paths.
The Academy is committed to providing a wide range of enrichment activities too, with students staying on site until 4.30pm in order to benefit from a choice of extra-curricular opportunities, or to complete independent study.
Graham Davis, Principal of Great Western Academy says “On behalf of the staff and students who are joining Great Western Academy for the first time, we are all excited about the opportunities which are before us. We want all students to enjoy their learning and teachers to enjoy teaching them. We will prepare our students to be filled with humble confidence, ready to become successful and enterprising citizens of the future”.
GWA has been opened under the Government’s Free School Initiative sponsored by New College Swindon. The grand opening for the Academy will be held in October when Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, a space scientist and educator will attend.
The Academy’s houses have been named after important space scientists and explorers – Aderin, Peake and Sharman.
GWA is also a fantastic resource for the new communities of North Swindon and the impressive facilities are already being booked by local groups. New College will also run evening and weekend classes from the Academy.
