WOMAD festival organisers are delighted to announce that Early Bird Tickets go on sale for the UK’s 37th edition of the World’s Festival on Wednesday 21 November at noon/12pm, from £155.
In a world where tolerance and inclusivity seem in short supply, the glorious global party that is WOMAD serves to be the perfect remedy, inviting artists from all over the world to come together and celebrate their different sounds and cultures. Only this past weekend, WOMAD Gran Canarias rocked the sunny island with a stunning line up, including afro-psychedelic band BCUC from Soweto who gained a legion of fans at this year’s WOMAD UK, the Malian legend Oumou Sangaré, Scotland’s dynamic folk trio Talisk and world famous South African male choir Ladysmith Black Mambazo who, among others, lit up the capital Las Palmas with a beautiful fusion of music from around the globe. There were also environmental activities designed to offset the festival’s carbon footprint; releasing turtles, eagles, a heron and planting 50 trees across the weekend.
July 2018 saw WOMAD UK enjoyed by 35,000 people with over 200 performances by almost 150 artists from over 50 countries in the green fields of Charlton Park. The weekend saw so many magical moments; from the genius that is Omar Souleyman, to Latin supergroup LADAMA, the multinational ensemble of woman building community and making music, newcomers K.O.G & The Zongo Brigadewith their infectious West African reggae via Sheffield, mad Belgian rockers KermesZ áL’Est, the powerful, rich vocals from Dobet Gnahoré, the UK debut for BCUC, the legendary Mali duo Amadou & Mariam, the soulful Meklit, not forgetting the last ever performance of Leftism by Leftfield, which drew one of the festival’s biggest audiences, and Washington DC’s punk rockers Thievery Corporation who brought what had been a very special WOMAD weekend to a magnificent end.
Chris Smith, festival director, says “Following on from an incredible weekend at WOMAD Las Palmas, where festival-goers came to party in glorious Gran Canaria, we are very excited to kick off WOMAD, Charlton Park 2019 today with our Early Bird tickets. We are living in uncertain and divisive times, and our mission is to unite people and to bring together with music and culture from all four corners of the globe to celebrate our differences.”
WOMAD 2019 will bring more discovery as it returns to the idyllic Charlton Park in Wiltshire from 25-28 July next year. First details of the line-up from around the world will be announced in the New Year, along with details of the usual educational and entertaining range of exhibitions, installations, talks, debates, science, poetry, art, food, pampering and activities for the whole family.
