A local history book about life in Swindon has won the 2018 Alan Ball Award – the national award for local history publications.
The book “A Swindon Time Capsule: Working Class Life 1899-1984” was the result of a Heritage Lottery Funded project by Swindon Heritage magazine and the Local Studies team at Central Library.
The book explores a vast donation of local history material by former Swindonian Mike Attwell and his family.
Now known as “The Dixon Attwell Collection”, it relates to Mike’s parents and grandparents.
“Basically, my parents never threw anything away” said Mike, “and neither did their parents!
So when I began the task of sorting through their stuff, I soon realised it amounted to a kind of time capsule of Swindon life, spread over three generations”.
It touches on many topics, from the cradle to the grave and everything in between!
This lavish, full-colour 160-pagebook is available to read in Local Studies and can be bought from the Central Library for only £10.
