The country was certainly blessed with some glorious weather at the start of the month after the early May Bank Holiday maximum temperature record was broken. But another period of scorching heat could be on the way as the Met Office predict temperatures could reach as high as 28C this weekend.

According to the Met Office chart, warmer weather will be sweeping across France before covering southern parts of the UK on Sunday. The maximum record temperature for the end of May Bank Holiday is 32.8C, but those highs might just be out of reach.

A Met Office spokesman said, “The average temperature for this time of year is 15C.“Currently, temperatures are averaging 20C and are only going to get warmer this weekend,” they added: “The maximum temperature ever for the end of May bank holiday is 32.8C, which came in Horsham, Sussex, on 29 May 1944.”

The Met Office outlook for Bank Holiday weekend predicts warm temperatures but also warns of thundery conditions.

It reads: “The Bank Holiday weekend will be mostly fine and sunny after any early mist and fog has cleared.“Scattered thunderstorms could affect southern and central areas at times, however, with mist and low cloud possibly affecting the east coast.“It will very warm or hot in the south and west, but often much cooler near eastern coasts.

“There will also be a brisk easterly wind across southern areas.” Some experts have predicted temperatures could push towards the high 20C’s mark by the end of the week amid predictions of another Bank Holiday scorcher.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden added: “Towards the end of next week and into the Bank Holiday weekend we expect a steady rise in temperatures.”

Bookmaker Coral has cut the odds to 4-5 for temperatures to hit 30C (86F) or higher before the end of the month. It is also offering 6-4 that this year sees the record for the hottest May day on record, 32.8C set in 1944, to tumble.

Spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said, “Saturday was a stunning day with the nation basking in sun for the Royal wedding and the cup final and it’s only set to continue.

“We’re expecting to see the thermometers push towards 30 degrees and our odds show that the record for the hottest May day ever is a genuine possibility.”
